City Circle will premiere new plays submitted to the organization throughout the year. Comedies, dramas, farces, you never know what will turn up at this wacky display of novel talent!

Broadway’s greatest farce is light, fast-paced, witty, irreverent and one of the funniest musicals ever written-the perfect escape from life’s troubles. A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum takes comedy back to its roots, combining situations from time-tested, 2000 year old comedies of Roman playwright Plautus with the infectious energy of classic vaudeville. The result is a non-stop laugh-fest in which a crafty slave (Pseudolus) struggles to win the hand of a beautiful but slow-witted courtesan (Philia) for his young master (Hero), in exchange for freedom.

Hard-bitten gamblers collide with pious Save-a-Soul missionaries in this quintessential musical comedy. The beloved Broadway tuner features song after classic song – “Sit Down, You’re Rocking the Boat,” “I’ll Know,” “If I Were a Bell.” Romp your way through Damon Runyon’s seedy Times Square down to pre-Castro Havana and back to the sewers and soup kitchens of Manhattan. And along the way, cheer for not one but two unlikely romances to succeed! Who will win in the end? I got the horse right here….
Book by Jo Swerling & Abe Burrows
Music & Lyrics by Frank Loesser
Production will be at the Coralville Center for the Performing Arts.

City Circle is thrilled to be kicking off our 2012-13 main season with Michael Frayn’s madcap farce “Noises Off!” The play takes a fond look at the follies of theatre folk, whose susceptibility to out-of-control egos, memory loss and passionate affairs turn every performance into a high-risk adventure.
This play-within-a-play, or “frisky freewheeling sex comedy about a frisky freewheeling sex comedy.” (USA Today) captures a touring theatre troupe’s production of Nothing On in three stages: dress rehearsal, opening performance, and a performance toward the end of the run. Each is portrayed from behind the scenes, progressing from flubbed lines and missed cues in the dress rehearsal to mounting friction between cast members in the final performance.
“The challenge for actors — and the director,” says director Wally Chappell, ”is to create a tightly bonded ensemble and strong character exploration, always the basis of flat-out farce. It will be great fun to rehearse, as well as perform.”
Auditions are scheduled for 6:30-9 p.m. Monday, June 18 at the Iowa City Public Library (Meeting Room B) and 6-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 19 at the Coralville Public Library (E. Jean Schwab Auditorium). There will be sides from the show available at the audition, but actors are also welcome to bring a brief comic monologue or even tell some of their favorite jokes!
Rehearsals will begin in mid-July and performances will be September 7-16. Please contact the director at email@example.com with any questions.
