This fresh, streamlined spin on the world's
greatest play features a live band, modern design, athletic combat
choreography and a host of local talent.
A love story, a gothic horror tale and a revenge fantasy in one, this
classic tragedy explores the nature of justice and passion as a young
prince struggles with the sins of the past. Hamlet's timeless
depiction of moral conflict in a corrupt world has particular relevance
for today's audience, a relevance emphasized by City Circle's
production.
The use of contemporary elements such as a live band help to make
Shakespeare's masterpiece "an accessible world of words and emotions,
intentions and consequences," states Rachel Howell, director of Hamlet.
Hamlet features a cast of 13, including I-You Theatre Company
co-founder and University of Iowa Theatre Department alumnus Kehry Lane
in the title role and Jason Grubbe, a frequent performer with the
Riverside Theatre Shakespeare Festival, as Claudius. Hamlet also
features City Circle veterans Aprille Clark, Maude Dornfeld, Richard
Paulus and Jay Stein. Fight choreography is provided by Jason Tipsword,
Artistic Director of Rage Theatrics, Iowa City's Action Theatre, with
set design by Jonathon Thull of Cornell College.
Audiences will leave exhilarated by the excitement of live theatre and
with a deeper appreciation of the timelessness of Shakespeare's
masterpiece.
