Auditions for Disney’s The Little Mermaid on March 24-26

This is City Circle’s annual teen musical and auditions are open to all Iowa teens who are currently in 6th-12th grades at the time of auditions.

AUDITIONS 

March 24 (Friday) 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. or
March 25 (Saturday) 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Callbacks: March 26 (Sunday) 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Auditions and Callbacks will be held at the Community of Christ Church, 2121 S. Ridge Dr. in Coralville.

Please come prepared with 32 bars of a song of your choice that showcases your talent and personality.  We don’t want you to stretch at auditions–we want to see who you are! Bring your sheet music in the correct key. An accompanist will be provided.

Your audition will consist of a five-minute individual audition, and a group dance audition. If your audition appointment on Friday is between 6 and 7:30 pm, you’ll be expected to stay (or return) for the 7:30 dance audition which will be done at 8:00 pm. If you are scheduled after 8:00 pm, you’ll be expected at the 9:30 dance audition which will finish at 10:00 pm.

If your audition appointment on Saturday is between 2 and 3:30 pm, you’ll be expected to stay (or return) for the 3:30 dance audition which will be done at 4:00 pm. If you are scheduled after 4:00 pm, you’ll be expected at the 5:30 dance audition which will finish at 6:00 pm.

Fill out an Audition Form to secure an audition appointment. Walk-ins are always welcome, but those with appointments will take priority. Once you fill out an Audition Form, our producer, Liz Tracey will contact you with your appointment time. If you submit a form, and don’t hear back from us within a couple of days, please email etracey@coralville.org.

Performance dates for Disney’s The Little Mermaid are June 16-18.

REHEARSAL SCHEDULE

Rehearsals will begin Monday, April 10 at 7 pm. A typical rehearsal schedule is Sundays 6-10 pm and Monday-Thursday 7-10 pm.  Please come to auditions with a complete list of conflicts. If you are cast, you may not miss rehearsals for conflicts that you didn’t list beforehand. When considering conflicts, please check your calendars for band and choir concerts, awards ceremonies, proms, exams, graduation/grad parties, family commitments, doctor/dentist appointments and anything  else that might conflict with the rehearsal schedule.

ABOUT THE SHOW

Based on one of Hans Christian Andersen’s most beloved stories and the classic animated film, Disney’s The Little Mermaid is a hauntingly beautiful love story for the ages. With music by eight-time Academy Award winner, Alan Menken, lyrics by Howard Ashman and Glenn Slater and a compelling book by Doug Wright, this fishy fable will capture your heart with its irresistible songs, including “Under the Sea,”  “Kiss the Girl”and “Part of Your World.”

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN

ARIEL – A mermaid and King Triton’s youngest daughter. She is obsessed with everything about the human world, and dreams of becoming a part of life above the water. Hardheaded, naive, and emotional, but also kindhearted. Vocal range top: Gb5. Vocal range bottom: Ab3.

PRINCE ERIC – A human monarch who has no interest of taking the crown. A handsome, affable lad with a buoyant, adventurous nature. After Ariel saves his life, he becomes obsessed with finding her and hearing her voice once more.  Vocal range top: G4, Vocal range bottom: B2.

GRIMSBY – Prince Eric’s British guardian. Droll, stuffy, and constantly urging Eric towards his royal duties, specifically marriage. Vocal range top: C4, Vocal range bottom: C3.

FLOUNDER – A fish and smitten with Ariel, his best friend. Rambunctious but cautious, fearful of the dangers that lurk in and above the water. Vocal range top: G4, Vocal range bottom: A2.

SCUTTLE – A disheveled seagull and expert in human artifacts. Loudmouthed, optimistic, and a bit ignorant, despite his supposed expertise. Vocal range top: G4, Vocal range bottom: C3.

KING TRITON – King of the Sea and Ariel’s father. Beneath his imposing presence and commanding nature lurks a harried single father who will do anything to protect his daughters. The death of his wife has also given him an irrational fear of humans. Vocal range top: F4, Vocal range bottom:Ab2.

SEBASTION – A crab and advisor to King Triton. A musical virtuoso who is constantly distraught from keeping after Ariel. Despite his paranoia, he can’t bring himself to stand in Ariel’s way. Vocal range top: C5, Vocal range bottom: Bb2.

FLOTSAM – An eel and one of Ursula’s lackeys. Oily and spineless, he will say anything you want or need to hear. Vocal range top: C5, Vocal range bottom: E3.

JETSAM – An eel and one of Ursula’s lackeys. Oily and spineless, he will say anything you want or need to hear. Vocal range top: A4, Vocal range bottom: B2.

URSULA – The banished Sea Witch and sister of King Triton. Supposedly spurned at childhood, she will use whatever method necessary to steal the kingdom and claim it as her own. Malevolent, calculating, and deceptive. Vocal range top: C5, Vocal range bottom: Eb3.

CHEF LOUIS – The French palace chef, diabolical and violent. A culinary perfectionist with an affinity for blades, seafood in particular. Vocal range top: A4, Vocal range bottom: Bb2.

ENSEMBLE – Crew Members (Pilot, Sailors); Sea Creatures; Mersisters (Aquata, Andrina, Arista, Atina, Adella, Allana); Gulls; Maids; Chefs; Animals; Princesses.
